SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES
Clear Lake Gem & Mineral Society, Inc. June 2011
Purpose: To fund courses in Geology, Mineralogy, Geophysics or Paleontology at any accredited university or college as part of a course of studies in Earth Sciences. Amount: $500 to $1000.00 each. The number of scholarships will normally be two (2) each year. Additional scholarships may be determined by the Board of Directors based on the funds available. We annually award two(2) additional $500 Scholarships to students at San Jac College not covered by this award.
Eligibility: An eligible applicant may be
(1.) A Senior in any Secondary School in Harris, Galveston or Brazoria Counties, with a demonstrated history of interest in the study of Earth Sciences and a resident of Harris, Galveston or Brazoria Counties; or
(2.) A resident of Harris, Galveston or Brazoria Counties, enrolled and in good standing in an established course of study towards a degree in Earth Sciences at an accredited university or college.
Applicants shall be sponsored by any accredited teacher or professor of the Earth Sciences in the Secondary School of Graduation or College/University which they plan to attend.
Reporting Requirements: The recipient shall provide a short written report (which will be published in the Club newsletter) and/or a short oral report given to the general membership at a regular meeting as to what the monies were used for or the results of studies resulting from the scholarship.
Scholarship announcement: The scholarship availability will be announced in the Club Newsletter, Stoney Statements prior to award. Copies of the newsletter may be distributed to academic advisors at area secondary schools or college/university at the discretion of the Scholarship Chairman. Decisions of the Awards will be announced at the next appropriate General Meeting.
Application Deadline: Applications must be received or post marked not later than the lst of July of the year to be awarded for the Fall Season. Late applications will not be considered. E-mail submissions will be accepted. Applications will be directed to the Scholarship Chairman.
Judging of Applications: Applications will be judged by the Scholarship Chairman and approved by the club members at the next general club Meeting.
Scholarship Chairman: An appointed or volunteer member of the CLGMS who has no family ties or financial ties with the applicants.
Application Requirements: Name; Address; Phone Number, and e-mail address (optional).
A short 1/2 to 1 page typewritten, single spaced) describing the applicants history in the earth sciences, what the scholarship would be used for (include course costs/expenses), and the applicant's overall goal in this course of study.
